Since 2017 I have consciously been on my Golden Rule journey, and here's how it has shaped me to become a better version of myself:
1. In order for me to treat others how I want to be treated, I must be aware of how I like and don't like to be treated. Meaning… to practice the Golden Rule in its full expression, it has been imperative to do the personal work of learning, accepting, and loving myself with everything that is me. This process has made me realize what I like and don't like being done to me and led me to have more self-compassion, which is vital to feel energized and live a happy, fulfilled life.
2. As practicing the Golden Rule consciously makes me more aware of other people's perspectives and needs, I learn more about myself and humanity in general. It makes me realize that doing to others what I want to be done to me might not be best. After all, although it might be MY preferred way of being treated, it doesn't mean that others wish to be treated in exactly the same way. Everyone has unique or peculiar wants and needs and wants to be treated accordingly. This is why I embrace the platinum version of the Golden Rule: Treat others as THEY want to be treated. This lets everyone know with just two words that My way is not always YOUR way or THE way and that for the Golden Rule to work its miracles, I must communicate and ask how someone wants to be treated. It helps to practice Humility.
I hope you will enjoy any/all of the different offerings the Charter for Compassion will provide on Golden Rule Day. I can't help but dream about what we will be able to create for humanity and mother Earth if we all remembered to live by the Golden Rule daily.
May we gain more understanding of this universal principle of reciprocity and peace so we may all thrive.
With love,
Felipe
